Sports stars with shocking diagnoses in 2011

Last year, the sports world has received some serious hits when NFL player Brandon Marshal was diagnosed with bipolar, Serena Williams was in danger of losing her life due to a blood clot and Venus Williams said goodbye to the tennis field due to an autoimmune disorder. Read more on these sports stars’ diagnoses and how they overcame their conditions.

Brandon Marshall – BPD. Miami Dolphin’s player has revealed that he was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. For the wide receiver it was a shock discovering he has to battle a psychiatric disorder for the rest of his life but, at the same time, he decided to raise awareness on the condition and become a BPD “face”.

Venus Williams – Sjoren Syndrome. The tennis player withdrew from the U.S. open in August due to the autoimmune disorder. Williams repeatedly reported injuries on her wrist, joint, knee and other parts of her body. The Sjoren Syndrome attacks the moisture-producing glands, leading to dry mouth, dry eyes and following problems with the internal organs and the central nervous system.

Serena Williams – pulmonary embolism. Williams came to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, in Los Angeles, in March 2011, with a blood clot in her lung, that later produced an internal bleeding. Now, she is doing better and she is working with her doctors to keep everything under control.
